More Ways to Enjoy your Water Feature
Add-ons, Upgrades, & Unique Services
We offer a number of optional products that complement our primary offerings. If you’re looking for further inspiration to enhance a water feature — or would like to build something a little more outside of the box — keep scrolling for ideas.
Underwater Lighting
Pond & waterfall lighting might be our most popular upgrade — and for good reason. Lighting extends your enjoyment long into the evening hours and brings a bit of magic with it too. It’s a must-have for those who work late and want to enjoy their features far into the season when the days get shorter.
-
When designing underwater lighting, we make sure to hide all fixtures and wiring within the stonework. With this approach, you won’t see anything artificial poking out during the daytime that would otherwise detract from the natural aesthetic of the water feature. Additionally, we create a network of underground conduit and junction boxes to protect the wires and make replacing fixtures down the road a breeze.
Landscaping
Every water feature needs landscaping around it. Trees and plants provide a serene context that enhance the natural look and feel of the feature itself. (Read More) We’ll typically start by bringing in trees – like Japanese Maples and Oriental Spruces – which help frame the space, create more depth, and add significant interest.
From there, we turn our attention to perennial plants and flowers. We like incorporating plant material that grows into thick, lush ground covers. This style of planting looks very natural, minimizes maintenance, and tends to conserve more water (especially when compared to a lawn).
Rainwater Harvesting Systems
Standard water features already function as sustainable landscape alternatives, but we can make them even better for both you and the environment. With a rainwater-capture design, you’ll be able to take stormwater that lands on your roof and store it in a large, underground reservoir for later use that’s connected to your water feature.
-
In our neck of the woods, places like Boston get over 40 inches of rainfall a year. On a 2,000 square-foot roof, this amounts to 50,000 gallons in rain that’s falling on your house and going to waste (often times, ending up in rivers and wetlands – where along the way, it has picked up harmful pollutants). While these systems are a hefty investment, the value of saving water goes a long way for both the planet and your pocketbook in the long-term.
Natural Swimming Pools & Recreation Ponds
Swim ponds offer the best of both worlds. On the hot days of summer, you can immerse yourself in a pristine body of freshwater that’s completely free of chemicals. When it’s cooler out or you don’t feel like jumping in, the experience around the water feature will be just as pleasing if not more than a traditional swimming pool.
-
Unlike a concrete or liner pool – which only gets used between late May to early September in eastern Massachusetts – a recreation pond with aquatic plant life and stone offers year-round enjoyment. From colorful water lilies that bloom all summer long to soothing waterfalls, just sitting pondside soaking up the natural beauty will be a highlight of your day – whether you’re going for a swim or not. With a recreation pond, you’ll enjoy all the perks of waterfront living minus the ugly, 8-month pool cover.
Slate Work
If you’re looking to add that extra bit of artistic flare, we can put our stone-laying skills to work in and around your water feature. Typically, you’ll see slate work running up the seams and cracks between large boulders. We can also craft custom stone planters using this technique as well.
