Office on the Water

DOVER, MASSACHUSETTS

About the Project

When my dad began working from home more in 2019, I thought it’d be nice to give him an office with a view. After analyzing the space, the bay window cantilevering into the landscape kept grabbing my attention. It got me thinking of Frank Lloyd Wright’s concept of organic architecture: a type of architectural design where buildings are inspired by, built around, and blend with their natural surroundings.

  • With that in mind, I decided a 10-foot by 10-foot koi pond beneath the window would fit nicely into the space and be a fun design to play with. Every pond also needs some falling water, so I added a small stream spilling into the pond for aeration and views from inside. With the feature completed, it now looks like the window was built for the sole purpose of bringing people (and cats!) closer to the water. In the summer, my dad even feeds his fish from inside!

IN HIS OWN WORDS

“I now have a home office that connects me to nature while I work. During the warmer months I have the windows open and can hear the soothing sound of the waterfalls right from my desk. Initially, I was just looking to replace some mature, top-heavy shrubs that had seen better days. What I got when Jonathan designed in the pond is something truly unique that adds another dimension to my yard.”
