The Cozy Koi Pond

DOVER, MASSACHUSETTS

About the Project

When Janet & Colin finished their new pool in 2020, they felt like the surrounding landscape no longer complemented the space. The traditional plants and shrubs in the vicinity (a common technique to camouflage a house’s foundation) seemed to fall flat in the midst of an updated hardscape design. To match the grandeur of the new look, we decided to create a centerpiece garden in the area immediately adjacent to the pool.

  • Janet and Colin particularly liked the idea of a Japanese Garden, so we naturally started the design with 14-by-7-foot koi pond, complete with water lilies and a trickling 4-foot stream. With limited room, we nestled the pond right up to the edge of the pathway, which gives the feature a well-defined and tucked-in look. However, we made sure to leave some room for a few specimen trees: an oriental spruce, dwarf pine, and of course, a red Japanese maple.

IN OUR CLIENTS’ WORDS

“Working with Jonathan was an absolute pleasure. His attention to detail and passion for what he does clearly shows through his design and ending result. We had a small space to work with but had always enjoyed the idea of a koi pond. Jonathan worked with our ideas and transformed what was a very bland space into a little gem. The mini waterfall and surrounding decorative trees remind us of various locations in which we've hiked and bringing that into our backyard is magical.”
